KPIS International School: The History of Planet Earth

Our students began the unit about Earth’s history by exploring rocks and their characteristics. They observed various rock samples and used the data to infer each rock’s general characteristics and classification. As they explore the unit, they will explain and provide evidence of what causes the change in rocks through time. At the end of the unit, they will be able to construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6 billion-year-old history.

Science is learning methods and skills through critical inquiry, utilizing scientific practices through developing explanatory claims, analyzing evidence through research and measurement, and applying appropriate scientific reasoning, along with developing valid solutions to understand and solve problems that affect us. At KPIS, students’ appreciation of science becomes more sophisticated as students progress through their educational journey. In middle school, the focus is construction. Students begin writing claims and drawing conclusions based on their own observations and data collection and begin building on evidence and their reasoning.
